One reason that people put off taking the requisite water damage prevention steps is that it can be intimidating to begin. Fortunately, this doesn’t have to be the case for you! In fact, many of the most important things you can do to prevent water damage can be done in a very short time. We go so far as to argue that four key water damage prevention steps can ALL be done in under an hour! Below are each of those steps and how you can do them in under an hour according to our water damage restoration experts at Restoration 1 of Low Country.
You can buy a water detection device at most stores or online in just a few minutes. Installing them is simple as well. Simply place near the ground in a few areas of your home that are most vulnerable to flooding. This should at least include your bathrooms, basement, and kitchen. Water detection devices are so useful because they notify you of a flood just like a fire alarm notifies you of a fire. That way, you can be notified of a flood long before it grows out of hand.
Window well covers are another item that you can buy for cheap at a local Home Depot or online. They are also incredibly effective for preventing water damage in basements. This is because one of the most common causes of basement water damage is water leaking in through the window wells. Window well covers should completely prevent any water from leaking through your window wells and into your basement.
Most water bills now can be checked online in just a couple of minutes. Your water bills can be a very helpful hint for allowing you to detect potential leaks in your home. The way you can do this is by comparing your current water bill to past water bills. By looking at your past water bills, you can establish a baseline for how much your water damage typically is. Then, when you look at the current month, you can compare that to past months to look for any significant differences. If the current bill is significantly higher for no apparent reason, then it is likely that there is a leak somewhere in your home that may be causing water damage.
You can do a walkthrough of your home to look for mold and must in just a few minutes. Make sure to give extra attention to the damp, dark areas of your home since those areas are the ones most vulnerable to mold growth.
So put our claim to the test! See if you can do each of these things in under one hour. Most importantly, however, by doing this your home will be far more protected from water damage than it was before. Yet, if your home does flood for any reason, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at Restoration 1 of Low Country for help.
